I’ll admit I took a serious break from running the past two years. Let me tell you, if you haven’t gone running for a couple years it’s not easy getting started again. If I’m being completely honest, a few months ago even a short run seemed quite miserable. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.
In the past I really enjoyed running. It just feels good to get outside and take in the beautiful scenery while getting an amazing cardio work-out. I really wanted to get back to that time where running was fun. But these days it just seems I need extra motivation to keep my running schedule on track.
Thank goodness for my Running Buddy! We started running together and advanced our work-outs slowly. We needed to train properly because running was new again and an over stressed body is usually ripe for an injury. We used the Jeff Galloway run/walk method and increased our pace and distance over a period of time. Having a plan made our workouts more enjoyable. We pushed each other and worked through tough minutes together.
Having a running partner made training more consistent. It would be so easy to skip a run if I didn’t have someone relying on my attendance. Not only would I be skipping a work-out, I would also be disturbing my friend’s work-out and no one wants to disappoint a friend. Even when we can’t train together we keep each other accountable for our workouts.
As a team we accomplished our first goal during a 5k race and now it’s time to set another goal. Good friends, great work-outs, and most of all we have fun – a LOT of fun! What’s better than that?
