Chris Ellington, Executive Vice President and CFO of UNC Hospitals, and Bernadette Spong, Senior Vice President of Finance and CFO of Rex Healthcare, are both included in the 2015 edition of the list, “150 Hospital and Health System CFOs to Know,” compiled by Becker’s Hospital Review.

This is the second year Becker’s Hospital Review has published a version of this list with 150 healthcare finance leaders. Their editorial team selected leaders through an editorial review process that included considering nominations, reviewing prior lists from the publication and conducting editorial research. Both Elllington and Spong were included in the 2014 edition of the list.

“Individuals included on the list help navigate their organizations through the stormy seas of healthcare reform and keep their ships upright during the shift to value-based healthcare,” said Becker’s Hospital Review in a press release announcing the list.

“Chris and Bernadette are both key members of UNC Health Care’s leadership team,” said William L. Roper, MD, MPH, CEO of UNC Health Care. “Their work has been an essential ingredient in the strong financial condition that UNC Health Care currently enjoys, and I am pleased to see that the value of their contribution has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review.”

Before joining UNC Health Care in 2008, Ellington served as vice president of fiscal services and chief financial officer at Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Lexington, Ky. He has also previously worked in similar positions at hospitals in Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina. In 2010, he was one of 17 winners named in the Triangle Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Awards.

Spong joined Rex Healthcare as CFO in 2005. A certified public accountant and former controller at Rex Healthcare, Spong makes time to serve on the boards of many local organizations, including her alma mater, Elon (N.C.) University Love School of Business, where she earned her MBA.
