CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC Hospitals was among four U.S. hospitals recognized today for quality care and patient safety by the American Hospital Association (AHA).

The hospital was honored as a finalist for the coveted American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize, which recognizes health care organizations committed to creating a culture of quality patient care and developing successful approaches to quality improvements. The award was presented at an AHA meeting in San Francisco.

“We are thrilled by this honor that recognizes UNC Hospitals as a national quality leader among U.S. hospitals,” said Brian Goldstein, MD, executive vice president and COO, UNC Hospitals. “Our outstanding medical staff and employees bring tremendous passion and dedication to caring for our patients. Their commitment to excellence in patient care is reflected in this achievement.”

The AHA’s selection committee of health care and patient experts praised the medical center’s “impressive efforts” to transform culture through the Carolina Care and Commitment to Caring programs and their focus on providing a patient-centered care environment. UNC Hospitals was also recognized for its innovative approach to coordinate and improve care for its patients through cross-functional teams consisting of physicians, nurses and care managers, called Triads, which were cited as an “excellent model from which others can learn.”

“Hospitals know that one of the best ways to bring greater value to health care services is to improve the efficiency, safety and effectiveness of the care they provide to patients and the community,” said Rich Umbdenstock, AHA’s president and CEO. “The hospitals we recognize today are using sustained efforts and achieving high results that enhance care for patients in their communities.”

The 2012 AHA-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize winner overall was University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. UNC Hospitals and Lincoln Medical and Mental Home Center in New York City were both named finalists. Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wis. received the citation of merit.

The American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize is presented annually to honor leadership and innovation in quality improvement and safety. The prize is supported by a grant from the McKesson Corporation. The criteria for the 2012 award include the demonstration of an organizational commitment to and progress in achieving the Institute of Medicine’s six quality aims — safety, patient-centeredness, effectiveness, efficiency, timeliness and equity. One goal of the award is to honor hospitals that are making progress in quality improvement with models that can be replicated by others in the hospital field.
