10 Ways to Maintain, Not Gain, This Holiday Season

The holiday eating season is upon us. But don’t panic. You can still enjoy the holiday festivities without gaining weight.

Check out these easy tips:

1. Remember what it’s all about.

Spend your time talking and socializing to avoid overeating and drinking. It’s easy to unconsciously nibble or pick at foods during the holidays. Step away from the food table. Even better, move the party out of the kitchen!

2. Find a smaller plate.

It will make a smaller portion look larger.

3. Never skip a meal before a holiday party or family meal.

You aren’t “saving” calories; instead, you’re putting yourself at risk of overeating at the party.

4. Don’t deprive yourself.

Moderation is the key to success. Pick your favorite holiday treats and enjoy small portions of them.

5. Chew each bite slowly.

Savor the great taste. Remember, it takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that you’re full. Eating slowly and mindfully will keep you from consuming too many unnecessary calories.

6. When you’re feeling stress, avoid turning to food.

Try using music, physical activity or another leisure activity to control your stress level. Maybe even start the tradition of running or walking in a holiday Turkey Trot or another outdoor event.

7. Choose the white meat and remove the skin.

This way, you can enjoy the turkey and save yourself some unnecessary calories.

It adds more unnecessary calories (and maybe a hangover). It’s also dehydrating, and thirst could lead you to drink even more! Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage.

9. Don’t give in to pressure.

Well-meaning family and friends might push you to have “just one more bite.” Many people show their love through food, but an intended nice gesture could lead you to sabotage your eating plan. Just politely say you’re full, and thank your host for being so gracious.
